“Our earth is place of great wonder and beauty. Every animal, insect, tree, plant, mountain, desert, ocean, bird and human being belongs here. We are part of a great mystery, inter-connected like the root system of trees, feeding and nurturing the other trees even as they die off. We are facing extinction of species and environmental devastation at an alarming rate. Because of our intrinsic connection with every animal, plant and mineral, our survival is dependent on the earth thriving. Now is the time for us as citizens of this planet to join to gather and create the world we want- where we all Belong; where we respect and honor our earth and one another.”
-Sally Jacques, Artistic Director & Founder of Blue Lapis Light
Belonging is a new site work that explores our inter-dependence with and relationship to the natural world, to be held on Austin's JJ Pickle building in 2018. This piece will include film and digital imagery, as well as ground dancers, aerial dancers and rock climbers. During 2017 we will workshop and perform sections of this work throughout the year.
Who We Are
Blue Lapis Light is a group of gravity-defying dancers in Austin, Texas, led by Artistic Director Sally Jacques. Our passion is creating site-specific dance works that inspire our audiences with beauty and wonder, as living prayers for the planet. As a site-specific company, over the last 10 years we have created original performances and danced on numerous urban buildings, on the edifices of hotels, over water, the inside of a power plant, and on an abandoned structure.
We take great joy in bringing aerial dance to our community. BLL's aerial dance classes have been going strong since 2007 and regularly engage students from ages 6-60 in creating stunning performances. Our Youth Taking Flight outreach program is in its tenth year of engaging underserved youth through collaborative dance performances.
With much support from our community, in the Summer of 2015 we opened the doors on our 3,000 sq. ft. custom aerial dance studio. In the last year, our new Studio has already increased class offerings for our adult and youth students, hosted student performances, provided adequate rehearsal space for our performers, and offered rental space for other local performers.
As a 501 c(3) non-profit organization, making our performances accessible to a wide range of audiences is central to our mission. We are committed to paying our performers, technicians and crew living wages. Your support makes it possible for us to fulfill both of these goals without sacrificing our artistic vision for the work. All funds raised for Belonging, in addition to ticket revenues and grants, go directly to paying production costs, staff, performers, technicians and crew. Your support today allows us to continue to inspire our community with our message of peace, beauty and compassion in the world for all beings. Please help us meet our $12k goal by Dec. 31st!
